Gutters serve a simple function. If you didn’t have them, rain, snow and sleet would pour off the slopes of your house and eat away the soil around the house foundation and damage the yard.
Gutters channel the water through downspouts and pour slowly onto your lawn in designated areas, resulting in a containable clean-up of your yard.
Need help learning to clean the gutters on your home?
With fall upon us and the leaves starting to fall, you need to keep a constant eye on your gutters. Leaves, twigs and rain water can accumulate quickly, clogging and weighing the gutters down. Regularly cleaning your gutters is necessary for maintaining them.
Gutters are very easy to maintain, but they can be expensive to replace, especially if they take with them part of your gutter boards when they go. Keeping a close check on your gutters can save you some money.
Handyman St Charles MO – Easy Gutter Cleaning Tips
Use a plastic scoop.
Find a small plastic scooping tool at your local home improvement/hardware store. You can use this tool to scoop out leaves and debris. You may want to shy away from using a metal tool as these can scrape the bottom of the gutter or the gutter seams and cause damage.
You can use your garden hose.
If you would like to hose off your gutter after leaves and heavy debris are removed, you can use a garden hose fitted with a spray nozzle. You can find a spray nozzle with a pistol grip handle at most of the home improvement stores.
These handles have easy to control water pressure adjustment settings and you only need one hand to use them, which is quite convenient.
There are several ways to find out if a downspout is clogged. Check all downspouts during the rain to spot the ones with less or no water flow.
Another way is to spray water at full pressure down the pipe, if you are hosing down the gutters. If the water keeps pooling at the top then you may have a clog.
Some experienced professionals can also find a clogged downspout by tapping on them and listen to the difference in the sound.
You can try tapping the outside of the downspout to help breaking up the debris inside. If that doesn’t work you may need to disconnect the downspout pipe to clean it out.
Consider a gutter guard.
Gutter guards can work for some homes to reduce the frequency needed for gutter cleaning from two times a year to once every year or every 3 to 5 years, depending on how fast debris typically accumulate in your gutters.
There are many gutter guard products and systems on the market. Remember to research which gutter guard system would be the best for your home. Keep in mind that the most effective gutter guard system may still require maintenance over time.
